As you know, twitter is a social media tool which you can use to post and interact with messages. These messages are called “tweets”.
Twitter is used as a broadcast medium. For this medium to be meaningful, you should often create interesting content and share it with your followers. In light of this, let us find some information on how to optimize CTR (clickthrough rate) of the tweets.
With this idea on mind, I have worked out CTR as the number of clicks on a tweeted link divided by the number of twitter users connected to the account which tweeted that link.
You can find below an infographic displaying some of my past findings as well as some new data found about maximizing CTRs on twitter.
This seems to be most pressing question for social media marketers with their tweets. Planning out to attract more people to like your posts is one of the most important aspects for you to be successful on twitter.
Let’s pay attention to some important steps to increase your exposure on twitter:
1. Basics are very important.
This is the founding stone for a better twitter exposure. You should get a clear understanding of fundamentals of twitter platform, when sharing content on twitter.
What NOT to do:
- Don’t burden your tweets with lot of hashtags. This may look unprofessional and spam. This will ultimately decrease the shareability of your tweets.
- Don’t tweet just for fun. Quality of your tweets doesn’t depend on the frequency of your tweeting. Twitter algorithm will not consider it for engagement, nor your followers.
- Don’t start tweets with @mentions. This will affect your mutual followers and diminish the visibility of your tweets.
- Don’t go over the limit. 120 – 130 characters would be ideal. Don’t use shortening words like “u” for “you” and “c” for “see”.
- Don’t use a “Big Mouth”. Especially, small business must try to make their tweets valuable source of trustworthy information for the users and this will get your business respect.
What you CAN do:
- To increase your exposure, you can provide your followers with relevant case studies, expert advice and views, industry news and tweets that maybe interesting to your followers.
- Do more research on the hashtags you are going to use.
- Be more patient and clearer to simplify your efforts. Use DrumUp’s recommendations to maximize your content, @mention and hashtags.
Characters are the main area to which you should pay more attention when creating tweets. These are the pillars of conversation you have to use when you engage in conversations with your customers.
Be creative by introducing videos, infographics, screen shots etc. with your limited number of characters when you compose tweets. This will ensure stronger audience engagement.
Remember, all the links (also called URL) that you expect to use in your tweets, should be shortened. Twitter has a link service to guide you regarding this aspect. Make it a habit of using twitter link service. So, your followers will develop trust towards your content and your business will have more productive respect.
Tweet links At a Slower Pace:
Do you get many clicks for your links as you would like? Click through rate (CTR) plays a major role in directing traffic to your website. This means more conversions, more business and more income for you.
So, if you like to achieve all of these, you need to have a higher CTR level from your tweets. The objective of your twitter accounts should be to get people to click on your links. It is not just for them to read your posts, like and re-tweet to others.
Tweeting multiple times is an effective way to reach your audience. You should allow at least half an hour between your tweets. This way will ensure that your followers are not overwhelmed. But you will be connected effectively.
Use the Right Time to Tweet.
Keep on mind that every audience is not the same. They are different and unique. So, it is very important to find out who exactly is your audience. It is also important to figure out the time they prefer to be online.
It is a known fact that most of the twitter users are engaged in the afternoon rather than in the morning. So, pressing the right button at the right time will yield higher CTR’s (click-through rates).
The Key is to choose the right word and the phrase:
Your success on twitter depends on how well you choose the words and phrases to use in your tweets. In fact, you need re-tweets sharing your message so that it will amplify your brand’s message. One of twitter user engagement of a particular brand happens by way of re-tweeting.
User engagement is the leading factor for a better click-through rate (CTR). So, it is imperative that you study these words from time to time. For example, words like “You”, “Please”, “Social”, “Media”, “Love”, “How to”, “New”, “@”, “Via”, “RT (Retweet)”, “the best”, “the most”, “twitter”, “help”, “blog”, “free”, “post”, “great”are effective words and phrases that will get you positive results.
But words and phrases such as “@add this”, “marketing”, “illegal”, “alien”, “selling”, “awesome”, “bad” may cause negative effects for your tweets.
Paper li. Experiment:
Twitter has limits for your tweets. These limits reduce downtime and prevent error pages. These limits apply to web, API, mobile, phones etc. Anyway, once you reach a limit, twitter will let you know.
But by using a service called Paper.li, you can make sure the links are up to the twitter standards. What paper.li does is that it puts links into newspaper format. The advantage of this system is that it makes your content relevant to your users. Also, it mentions 2 – 3 users in each paper.
So, your followers will have a single page on twitter on a daily basis and the users will find it suitable for them to stay up to date on the latest news.
When it comes to words and phrases, there are some words and phrases that twitter loves. We call these viral words. These are the words and phrases that twitter considers better to tell users what to do and when to do it.
I have given below a list of viral words. It may seem simple. But it will go a long way in yielding a long-lasting engagement of your audience as well as compelling them to take action.

What are the best days for tweeting?
Weekend means motivation for most of the people. There’s no argument against it. Every Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, we toil. But this toiling is not for the people we care. So, most of us look forward to the week end to be with our friends & family. Also, these are the days for us to recreate and rest.
Weekends keep you active and keep you going. Working hard around the house with the family is fun, you know! Reading an e-book, browsing the internet, social media. For all of these we wait for the weekends, away from our jobs.
People get the chance to relax during weekends and get ready for the usual jobs beginning Monday. This routine goes on and on until the next weekend. So, considering this fact, weekends naturally are the days that we should target our audience. By doing this, we can have a better click-through rate (CTR) on our tweets and gain a more profitable conversion for our business.
On average, most of the people will be online because they are mentally free from their tedious work in the office of field. (Sometimes, house hold chores may seem to be tedious, but there’s pleasure in working for his/her own family)
Why not we make use of this aspect and start tweeting our followers and potential users on weekends? Â We should monitor the audience engagement thoroughly from time to time, if we are ever to succeed in promoting our brand/service on twitter.
